Locust Dragons

An offshoot of the normal dragons, these creatures are viewed with a degree of disdain from others of their race. They are seen as a lesser race, still greater than humanoids, but less than other dragons. Most dragons would even be insulted to be put in the same category as Locust Dragons, often times saying “Would you consider yourself to be the same type of creature as a wolf?”

Locust Dragons are so named because of their lifestyle; they eat what they can find, breed, then die off. They have no love of treasure that other dragons share, and lack the intelligence to put together any real lifelong goal. They are very logical, however, and can sometimes be taught to complete simple services, such as serve as a mount for a small creature, or retrieve treasure from its prey. Some creatures try to keep Locust Dragons as pets or mounts, and the arrangement works out quite nicely if the masters are sure not to aggravate the creatures too much. Their primal nature is never very far from the surface, and may snap at a moment’s notice, more content to eat the creature that has shown it kindness than to continue with this arrangement.

Locust Dragons are identifiable by the mix of grey and crimson in their skin, which is unique to each one. They are often compared to stripes on a tiger, or spots on a leopard. They eat meat, however their digestive systems are not built to keep down most material. They can survive off of normal creatures, but it is disgusting to them, like how raw meat tastes to humans. Locust Dragons prefer to eat things that have been doused in magic, that have been absorbing it for some time, and adventurers are practically the perfect meal for them. They prefer actual spellcasters, but anyone who has been carrying a large number of magic items for some time is also a tasty snack. Please note that Locust Dragons do not actually feed off of magic, and have over the years evolved to better fight opponents who can harness these abilities. Magic items can provide a pleasant taste for Locust Dragons, and they might keep an enchanted sword or some other such item nearby to nibble on. However, it provides them with no sustenance, they actually need to feed off of meat, and the magic is just for flavoring. Magic items could be compared to mints to humans, tasty, but ultimately not nourishment.

Locust Dragons do not get stronger as they age, unlike other dragons. They have a normal lifespan, typically no more than seventy years. They die of old age then, usually with a last meal or a magic item between their teeth.

Level Adjustment:-

Breath Weapon: Everything within this 40 ft cone are affected by a dispel magic effect, like the spell cast as a tenth level caster. Creatures caught within this cone are still appetizing to Locust Dragons.
Spell-Like Abilities: As though cast by a tenth level wizard. 3/day hold person, fireball. DC 15+spell level.
Energy Resistance 10: A Locust Dragon absorbs the first ten points of damage from each energy type that hits it each round, assuming it comes from a magical source.
Magic Sight: Locust Dragons see magic better than they do light. They have a constant “detect magic” ability active. If a character has no magic items on, has no spells affecting him and cannot use magic, he gains 40% concealment against the Locust Dragon. Items that are rendered dormant by a Locust Dragon’s breath weapon are still considered to be magic for the purposes of this ability.
