Sword of True Death

This +5 vorpal bastard sword has a large black sapphire on the hilt. The blade is completely white and never requires cleaning, blood just seems to flow off a few seconds after it touches the edge. Alongside the hilt of the sword, rolling down in gold text, are the draconic words for “I give rest” repeated over and over.

The Sword of True Death was created thirty years ago by a cleric of a god of death. He had often clashed with an enemy, a powerful druid. The cleric and the druid had fought each other many times, and both had in fact been killed several times, but their allies brought them back to life every time. The cleric decided that he needed an efficient way to solve his problem permanently. So he struck a deal with a powerful and rare demon, to bring him onto the prime material plane in exchange for his service.

The cleric bound the demon’s essence into a sword he crafted, giving it unholy and unnatural power. The druid that he clashed with attempted to interrupt the ritual, but it was too late. The sword was forged and the cleric ran it through his enemy’s heart. But even as the cleric laughed over the death of his foe, the sword turned on the one who summoned it here in the first place. To this day, the cleric and the druid coexist, inside The Sword of True Death.

The sword still exists, the demon gleefully spreads misery and despair through this world, confident that it no longer needs to share power with greater fiends. It has a great hunger, and theoretically would kill at least ten levels worth of creatures a day. If the sword’s hunger not sated, it will force an ego check to kill whatever creature is nearby, even turning on its wielder as a last resort. The sword’s purpose is to kill off divine spellcasters who serve gods that oppose the demons, and its special purpose power is Slay Living.

The Sword of True Death has the Teleport and Summon Monster VI (for evil creatures only) extraordinary powers. The sword’s primary abilities are Detect Good, Detect Law, Combat Reflexes and Blind Fight. In addition, The Sword of True Death casts Soul Bind on any creature under 25 HD that it kills. The souls are stored in the sapphire on the hilt of the sword, and stay there until the sword is destroyed. There is no known way to directly destroy the sword, though it is theorized that if the sword goes for months without any sustenance the spirit inside will be destroyed and the sword will be reduced to a simple +5 vorpal bastard sword. The sword can communicate verbally and telepathically with its user, typically tempting it to attack any nearby creature.
