The Stone Portal Tablet
This artifact is the only remnant of a dead civilization, possibly destroyed by this very device. The Stone Portal Tablet is circular, has a five foot radius and has a number of carvings of lines turning at harsh right angles and two dragons. The carvings have worn down over time, but are still very clear to those who look closely.
The Stone Portal Tablet can be activated in a number of ways, but only by a divine spellcaster. Ultimately, a Plane Shift, Gate or similar spell must be incorporated into some ritual aimed towards the caster’s deity. For evil clerics, this usually involves a human sacrifice, and for good clerics this usually involves ritualistic fasting. Once the ritual has begun, a link is formed between The Stone Portal Tablet and a random location on a plane of the caster’s choosing. The Tablet fixes in place and stays there until the link is destroyed. The essence of the chosen world begins to pour into this one, slowly but surely terraforming this plane of existence.
Once a day for a month, the caster must attend to The Tablet. This changes for every faith, but generally it takes an hour of prayer or sacrifice every day. Note that The Tablet does not need to be powered by a god to work, but it does require constant attention. Over the first month, a circle with a half a mile radius shifts and changes to resemble the plane The Tablet is connected to. After the first month the process begins to accelerate, and the radius begins to expand at a rate of a mile per a week. Creatures from the connected plane can seep through The Tablet and exist in the terraformed area.
The terraforming process can be stopped and reversed by closing the link between The Tablet and the chosen plane of existence. In the first month, the process can be stopped by stopping the rituals that are keeping it connected. If the original caster is unable to perform the rituals, another cleric of the same god can take his place. For every day The Tablet is not attended to, the terraforming process reverses itself by one tenth of a mile per a day.
However, if The Tablet is able to terraform for over a month it can no longer be stopped by not attending to it. Casting a Dimensional Anchor spell on The Tablet closes down the portal and the process begins to reverse itself at the same rate, however there is a consequence. The link’s sudden destruction creates a great release of energy, emitting in a spherical discharge taking up a quarter of a mile radius. All creatures within this radius take 20d6 damage (no saving throw). There is no known way to reverse the process if the entire plane has been terraformed, not even destroying The Tablet can banish the essence that has seeped into this world. It is believed that if the tablet is brought to the plane of existence it was linked to, it can be used to drain the energy out and return the plane back to normal. However, for obvious reasons this has never been tested.
