Gandava
Gandava is an ancient and benevolent dragon, best known for shedding its physical shell and existing as pure energy. Gandava was once a great gold dragon who protected a monastery on a mountaintop, unheard of from the outside world. Through watching the monks he guarded he learned the secrets of ki and inner power. For centuries they lived in harmony together, until one day a great evil swept across the realm. Gandava and the monks came to aid the forces of good against their great foe and fought bravely. However, by the end of the way the monks had all died in battle, only Gandava remained. Sorrowful, but proud of the monk’s sacrifice, he returned to the monastery. For a hundred years he kept the traditions of the monastery alive, singlehandedly maintaining the temple and going through the exercises of the dead monks.
Eventually the exercises built Gandava’s ki up so much that his spirit no longer required a physical body. After a hundred years he clawed his way out of his body and became so much more than a dragon. He became a being of energy of power and of pure holiness. Gandava still guards the temple, and in recent times has dedicated himself to selecting a few great warriors to revive the ancient way of the monks. Gandava has begun leaving the temple for periods recently, to retrieve some holy artifact, to hunt down an evil creature or to visit a good aligned plane of existence at the behest of a greater force.
Gandava is known for his particular politeness and attention to etiquette. He tends to appear in the form of whatever race he is visiting at any particular time, afraid that his natural form is intimidating to smaller creatures. His temple is a sanctuary for anyone who serves the cause of good or is being hunted by evil.
