The Heralds of Protection: A Lawful Good Secret Society
The Heralds of Protection are a society that spans the entire world, hidden in societies everywhere, ready to heed the call of those who need help. They can be found anywhere, in a large benevolent nation, or a city ruled by evil and corruption. They are little more than rumors to most people, spoken about as though they were some supernatural force that will deliver the innocent from evil. They hide in plain sight, as judges, officers, farmers, never revealing their true agenda to the public.
The Heralds of Protection have a reputation for wildly riding in to overthrow the corrupt and wicked. More than one children’s story tell tales of a paladin from The Champions (a name many peasants have given The Heralds of Protection) marching into an overlord’s chamber, demanding a duel and swiftly decapitating the evil king, despite his dirty tricks. In truth, this story and other like it are completely fabricated. The Heralds of Protection take a much more passive role in the fighting of evil. They provide sanctuary and supplies to those who are on the run, whisking them away to one of dozens of safe houses they maintain.
The Heralds of Protection are peaceful in nature and only use combat as an absolutely last resort. They do not plan jail brakes, but will harbor escaped prisoners who were unjustly held. If there is a conflict over a refugee, The Heralds of Protection far prefer to use intimidation and hope that their enemies back down without a fight. This has earned them the annoyance of many who would rather take a much more direct approach to fighting evil, but they are firm in their ways. The Heralds of Protection are also known for bringing supplies and information to those who are willing to take more direct action against evil.
The Heralds of Protection were founded, and are currently run, by a pale skinned, winged celestial named Calensius. Calensius was exiled from his home plane for allowing a demon to live, a show of mercy for the pitiful creature. Calensius has taken up residence on this plane of existence and has since begun spreading his philosophy of mercy and peace. Those who have seen him say that he is a master swordsman, but only fights when reason fails and he cannot flee. He is also rumored to have tremendous healing powers, capable of reviving the dead, curing diseases and healing any injury.
When a new member is initiated, no matter what class he is, into The Heralds of Protection he begins as a Protector. Protectors protect the safe houses, gather supplies and try to place themselves as respectable figures in whatever society they live in. Most members of The Heralds of Protection never stop being Protectors, no matter how talented they becomes.
Many spellcasters are promoted to being Crafters, who create enchanted items for The Heralds of Protection to use. Specifically, they create a number of potions and items that hide their identities, thoughts and alignment from magical detection, allowing them to do unnoticed in normal society. They tend to also have a number of teleportation spells for quick escapes.
Clerics and other healers tend to stay in the safe houses to heal injured refugees and to keep the Protectors healed if the safe house is attacked. They also create large amounts of holy water, to either be distributed to any who need it, or to be used in battle if it is required.
Rogues are used for minor heists, stealing supplies in times of need or sneaking into guarded areas to memorize secret documents. They are also used to stalk well known evil figures, reporting their daily actions back to their superiors.
Those who have shown combat potential are promoted to Champion rank, the aspect of The Heralds of Protection that most commoners know about. They handle the retrieval of fugitives who are being hunted. Even evil creatures are not ignored if they are being hunted for the wrong reasons, or if they would suffer unjustly if they are captured. To be promoted to a Champion one must show the greatest amount of mercy, because they are put in situations that lead to violence very easily. Champion are considered to be a higher rank than most, and can always count on help when it is required.
