Arcspiders

Arcspiders are strange, magical arachnids of unknown history. They are secretive creatures, never revealing too much about themselves and trying to remain hidden. They hide in underground if possible, in cities they stay in the sewers. They are remarkably intelligent, extremely dangerous and as tricky as creatures come.

Arcspiders resemble enormous, black spiders with large stingers and spots of red along their backside. They have faces of humanoids, and in some cases goblinoids, which they use to communicate with other creatures. Arcspiders are intelligent and have great talent with languages, most know at least five or more. They are particularly impressed with humanoids who know many languages, as such knowledge seems to be a status symbol in their society. Arcspiders are fond of bets in general, and may spare a humanoid who wagers his life in an interesting contest. While Arcspiders do not make stupid bets, they can be persuaded to take the longshot if they can be convinced that doing so would be more interesting.

Arcspiders feed on the lifespan of humanoids and goblinoids. A creature that was killed in the last hour may be consumed by an Arcspider for its lifespan. For every year the consumed creature would have left before dying of old age, the Arcspider is sustained for one day. For this reason, Arcspiders enjoy hunting elves and other humanoids with long lifespans. They see humans as the staple of their diet, being common enough to hunt in large numbers, and other races as delicacies. Arcspiders do not digest the meat, and can be detected by their droppings of undigested food.
