Hector Redson
Hector was the son of a knight, and as such was groomed for the same position since he was very young. His father taught him the art of the sword since he was a child, and as soon as he was old enough Hector joined the standing army. Within his first month of duty he was called to battle, against a small army of particularly violent and cruel orcs.
Hector’s patrol was ambushed on their first scouting mission. All but three members were brutally slaughtered: Hector Redson, Boron Freeson and the patrol’s leader Valice Incall. The three survivors were brought to an underground prison, poorly lit and with watery soup for the prisoners. A month dragged on with constant abuse from the guards. Hector had given up all hope of being rescued and refused to defy his captors, but Valice was not so submissive. One day Valice was being beaten by the guards and he pulled a makeshift dagger from under his sleeve. He stabbed the guard in the stomach, a serious, but ultimately nonfatal wound. The other guards grabbed Valice and hauled him off.
That night the soup was strangely thick and chunky. Boron refused to eat, but Hector had not tasted meat for a month and he gobbled it down, even knowing what was in it. In the following months the war was going badly for the orcs and their food stores were running low. They barely had enough food for themselves, never mind their prisoners. So more and more prisoners began disappearing and more and more chunky soup appeared until only Baron and Hector were left. One day the guards were called away to battle, to a final stand against the human army. The orcs were defeated and killed, but the humans were unable to find the hidden prison. Hector and Boron were left to fend for themselves.
It took three days for Boron and Hector to cut their way out of their cell. It was to take them another week to cut through the portcullis, but five days in without food made Hector restless. He was starved and desperate, and there was nothing in their prison to eat. In a moment of madness, Hector took one of the broken bars from his cell and killed his fellow knight. For the next four days he carved through the portcullis and ate the corpse of Boron, until finally he was free. He stumbled out, towards civilization until he was picked up by a passing patrol of humans. Hector was welcomed home as a hero.
Hector returned home without telling anyone the truth about what he had done in that prison. However, he found himself with a new hunger. Whether because of some parasite or disease he gained from eating the flesh of humans, or by some curse of the gods for killing his fellow knight, he found that he yearned for more human flesh. He tries to control the impulses, but every few weeks he finds the hunger to be unable to control. At that point he takes his hidden orc double axe, which he looted from the orcs’ camp when he left, kills a human and eats his fill. Hector has become xenophobic against orcs and those of orcish blood because of the abuse he suffered from the guards, and attempt to frame any in his community for the murders (which is why he uses an orcish weapon.)
Hector looks very charming at first glance. His hair is blonde and his face is handsome. The only flaw are a number of black lines beneath his eyes, from sleepless nights where he regretted his killings and dreaded that he would have to do them again.
Hector can be in any community that fits your campaign. He can be in a large city, where his killings have made him a famous serial killer, or a small town, where the killings are mysterious and frightening. He could have just come home and is struggling with his hunger, or have returned years ago and become resigned to his cannibalistic nature.
Officially, Hector is still a knight. He teaches swordplay to younger children and aspiring knights. He has kept his mastery of the orc double axe a secret to keep his murders anonymous. He is deeply paranoid about anyone finding his weapon and takes elaborate measures to hide it.
