Umbra Spirit

Umbra spirits are outsiders from the plane of shadow. They can either be summoned here by some dark mage, or they might find their own way to the material plane through cracks in the plane of shadow, squeezing through into this world like water through a leaking roof. Umbra Spirits are notorious for being treacherous, and if a mage summoned one to his home plane he better be on his guard, for the Umbra Spirit might betray him at the first opportunity.

Physically, Umbra Spirits look like large shadows. Typically there are gaps in the blanket of darkness, making the rough shape of two eyes and a large, grinning mouth, however the “Umbra Spirit” may conceal these features if it wishes. An Umbra Spirit’s favorite trick is to wait in a dark room for prey to enter, then use its Acidic Touch attack to feed off of them.

Many adventurers might assume that an Umbra Spirit is weaker in sunlight than in darkness, and try to lure it out of its lair. However, Umbra Spirits are not harmed by sunlight, or even discomforted by it, and are quick to pursue prey even in the light of day.

Acidic Touch: Any living creature that touches an Umbra Spirit, either by standing on it, if the Umbra Spirit grapples it, or if the creature accidentally stands on the Umbra Spirit, takes 5d6 acid damage. A creature that accidentally stood on the Umbra Spirit may make a reflex save (DC 17) for half.

Shadow Grapple: If an Umbra Spirit loses a grapple check, it merely disconnects the grapple, and cannot be grappled in return. An Umbra Spirit may grapple up to five enemies at any given time. On any round where a living creature is grappled by an Umbra Spirit, it is affected by the “Acidic Touch” attack.

Darkness Invisibility: An Umbra Spirit is considered to be under the affected of a Greater Invisibility so long as it is completely within an area that is dark enough to offer concealment.
