Lafiv

Lafiv is a strange creature to say the least, a hobgoblin priest of a dragon goddess. Lafiv is known for being particularly cruel, he does not tolerate failure or insubordination from his underlings. Most of his followers fight to the death, knowing that if they return to Lafiv empty handed they will be tortured until they are killed.

Lafiv was born into a small hobgoblin tribe, not particularly well known, but efficient mercenaries. At a young age Lafiv was taught how to fight, in preparation for going into the “family business” of fighting for money. Even when he was very young, Lafiv dreaded his eventual fate of being a hired sword, subject to the whims of whoever hired him. Lafiv desired personal glory, not anonymity as a nameless fighter for the highest bidder.

Despite this, Lafiv eventually grew to accept his role in life, and when he was old enough he was sent on his first mission. The hobgoblins had been hired by an ageing, imprisoned wizard to retrieve a small, blue orb called “The Dragon’s Word.” Legend said that it would allow whoever held it to commune directly with a dragon goddess. When the hobgoblins got to the temple, they were ambushed by a human adventuring party. Lafiv was just a lowly soldier at the time, and was easily overlooked when in the ensuing chaos he snuck into the temple. He found the shrine that held The Dragon’s Word, he spoke the incantation to open it, and inside was the blue orb he had been hired to retrieve. Lafiv reached out and grabbed it, and in that moment touched the dragon goddess’s mind. She told Lafiv that his life did not have to end as a pointless mercenary, that if he chose to serve her, she would give him the personal glory he wanted so much. Lafiv did not look back as he snuck out of the temple, even as his own brother was slaughtered in the battle.

The goddess instructed Lafiv to bring The Dragon’s Word to a group of her followers. Lafiv obeyed, sought of her followers and handed over The Dragon’s Word. Just as he let it fall from his hand, the dragon goddess gave him one last vision, of a nest in the mountains to the west. She told Lafiv to go there, and to take the egg within. Lafiv traveled for a week, almost died of exhaustion and hunger on the way up, but he knew that what lay within that nest was worth the suffering. Inside was a single griffon egg, its mother having been killed recently by an adventuring party. However, this egg had a particular red hue to it. Lafiv snatched it from the nest and brought it back to civilization, where he cared for it until it hatched. From the egg came a half-dragon griffon, which Lafiv named “Ver” raised as his mount and only friend.

The dragon goddess made good on her promise to Lafiv, he has been given autonomy from the rest of her followers. He controls his own cell of personal worshipers, mostly other goblinoids, but a few humans have found their way in. Lafiv, and his griffon mount Ver, and feared and respected by his few followers. Lafiv makes it a point to consolidate his power regularly, usually be feeding a weak or insubordinate follower to Ver. Ver is just as cruel as her master, and enjoys playing with her prey like a mouse would before eating it.

Lafiv’s ultimate goal is to spread chromatic dragons through the world and to make them the dominate species in this plane. Lafiv is involved in any number of activities to support this goal, from rescuing lost of captured dragon eggs, to killing young non-chromatic dragons, to searching for lost artifacts. Lafiv has gained a reputation as a treasure hunter, though he is less interested in gold as he is powerful magic items. Currently, he is searching after three that are said to have been created by the dragon goddess herself, The Goblet of Red Blood, The Dragon’s Tooth and The Eye of the Desert.

The stats below are for Lafiv himself, however he is rarely seen without Ver.
