Kraegahn Fritznam

Kraegahn is the loyal teenage follower of a lich necromancer, a willing servant to a dark master. Kraegahn first fell into his master’s grasp when he was an infant, and the lich killed his family’s caravan on a whim. The lich found Kraegahn in the ashes crying, and by some streak of luck for the child, the lich did not kill him. Instead, he decided to raise the boy to be the perfect servant, drilling his belief in his master’s superiority all his life.

It took years for Kraegahn to be useful, but the lich was already very old and was willing to spend the time to raise the boy. As he grew, learned to talk and write and eventually learned to wield a sword, the lich took to watching Kraegahn more and more closely. The lich began to suspect that despite his best efforts, Kraegahn would someday betray him.

In that mind, the lich sent Kraegahn to a city at a young age to enter the standing army. This both solved the lich’s problem of having someone close by who could betray him, and gave him an ally in the militia of a problematic city. In the lich’s mind, if Kraegahn did betray him, he would be too far away to do any damage, and if he was loyal, he would be an invaluable tool in his long term plans. Every month or so, Kraegahn brings his master reports, and they strategize. Otherwise, unless there is an emergency, the two do not communicate.

Despite the lich’s concerns, Kraegahn sees his lich master like a father, and loves him as much. He has no intention of betraying his master, and the only ill-will he feels towards the lich is over not being given larger responsibilities. Kraegahn’s duties are mainly focused around being a mole in the city’s militia and strategically leading the lich’s undead. Kraegahn yearns to be included in his master’s deeper plans, but thus far has been stonewalled. Whenever he confronts his master over this, he replies with a cryptic statement, saying that Kraegahn is not ready yet. Kraegahn has a deep respect for structure, and demands that all under his command be as disciplined as possible, whether they be living or undead. He has destroyed several undead in the past for being “undisciplined,” which could mean anything from having flesh fall off them to being unsymmetrical. This has greatly annoyed the lich, and he has punished Kraegahn for destroying some of his servants.

The lich does not love or respect Kraegahn, and is completely willing to sacrifice him if he thinks it beneficial. He does recognize that Kraegahn has some skills that the lich himself does not have, specifically a knowledge of tactics and strategy.

Kraegahn would make a good mid-level encounter in a campaign that you would like to one day have a lich in. The player characters might be catching on to the lich’s schemes, perhaps ruining some of his lower-level plans, and the lich would decide to send Kraegahn after them. As Kraegahn now commands a small battalion of soldiers himself, he could easily convince law officials that the PCs are villains. The valiant PCs might find themselves being pursued by the very people they are trying to save. They may not even recognize Kraegahn as villainous at first, seeing him as being manipulated just like all the other soldiers pursuing them. Later, Kraegahn could be seen again, this time leading undead instead of soldiers.
