Katlyn Jernighn, Alien Elvish Wizard

Katlyn was born in a different plane of existence, into a poor family in The Great Elvish Empire. Despite being elvish, and therefore being a citizen and having rights, her poor status virtually assured her a life of poverty for centuries to come. Her parents could not afford to school her, despite her great intelligence that showed at an early age. It seemed like she was doomed to work the fields, alongside dozens of other poor elves, barely above the human and dwarven slaves. However, Katlyn was not one to merely accept her situation, even at such a young age. She began stealing books on magic and teaching herself enough to become a wizard, despite having no master to tutor her.

When Katlyn was twenty, she believed her arcane knowledge was great enough to make a demonstration, and show the world what she was capable of. She found a young rich mage, taunted and goaded him into trying to humiliate the poorer elf, and as soon as he released his first spell she retaliated with full power. The boy almost died, and Katlyn was to be arrested, except for a mage of mediocre power but great influence watching. The elder mage arranged for Katlyn to be placed into his care and taken away from her family, never to see her again.

For another thirty years Katlyn learned under her master, and it was not long until she had exceeded him in power. Sensing that there was nothing more that he could teach her, Katlyn conspired with one of his enemies, a more powerful wizard of higher rank, but who was being challenged by Katlyn’s master. Katlyn simply found a single underhanded dealing of her master, not difficult given his record of deceit and lies, and informed his rival, who in turn informed the authorities. Katlyn’s master was caught smuggling minotaur slaves into the country without paying the proper taxes. For his crime, he was arrested, stripped of his rank and all of his property was confiscated, including his apprentice. In exchange for her help, her master’s rival bought Katlyn as his apprentice, and began teaching her.

Again, Katlyn learned everything that she could from her new master, this time only taking fifteen years. Once she believed that she had nothing more to learn from him, she betrayed her new master, slipping black lotus extract into his tea for a rival. In exchange, she became his new apprentice, who was actually an advisor to the Archmagus Supreme, the unrivaled ruler of The Great Elvish Empire. For another ten years she served this master, slowly gaining his trust, until he named her his successor. Not a month after that declaration, Katlyn’s master died in a duel when his wand unexpectedly ran out of charges. Katlyn was never accused of arranging the death, and she was considered a worthy candidate to take her master’s place as one of his twelve advisors. All she had to do was pass her wizarding license exam, which she accomplished easily, and she became the youngest advisor to the Archmagus Supreme in all of history.

But this was not enough for Katlyn. Thus far she had escaped notice from higher powers in The Great Elvish Empire because she was a mere apprentice, but this sudden change to one of the most powerful figures in the entire empire drew much attention to her. She sensed that she had made enemies, and soon they would begin conspiring against her just as she had done for years. Katlyn lacked the patience, and in her mind, the time, to wait for the aging Archmagus Supreme to die. Even if he did die on his own, she had eleven other, older mages waiting to take his place. In order to ensure her place of power, and to protect her from her enemies, Katlyn began to plan her masterstroke. A plan to do what none other had ever done, kill the Archmagus Supreme and the other eleven advisors all at once and claim power for herself.

It took months to plan, but Katlyn made her alliances with a handful of ambitious and neglected members of the elven military. She made sure the guards were out of the way for the coup, but a problem remained. The guards for the Archmagus Supreme and his advisors were mostly ornamental, it would take an army to overtake all the mages, which Katlyn did not have. So she arranged for a meeting to take place in a small room, claiming that she had uncovered spies in one of the ruling houses, and that the information she was to present must be completely private. The room she selected was just small enough for an Antimagic Field to cover. Her plan was to cast the spell, and have her comrades immediately rush in to complete the coup.

However, something went wrong. Right before Katlyn planned to cast the spell, she found herself unable to move. The Archmagus Supreme smiled, a gentle smile from an old man, and he casually informed her that he had been aware of her plans for months. He had allowed her to flesh out potential traitors in his ranks and bring them all into one place, to be quickly and easily overwhelmed by a fully powerful council. Katlyn watched as her greatest plan, the one she had risked everything on, fell to pieces before her. Her allies were torn to pieces before the mages, and all seemed lost.

But Katlyn was not ready to give up so easily. She had made preparations in the event of failure, and had prepared a “Dispel Magic” spell that she neither needed to speak or move to cast. While her fellow mages were dealing with her allies, she dispelled the spell holding her, then teleported herself to her room in the castle. She was unable to teleport out of the castle altogether due to wards placed around it a millennium ago, and she knew that she would be overcome quickly. She removed two tomes from her bookshelf, her spellbook and a rare one that she had acquired specifically in case she was ever found guilty of treason, which this certainly qualified as. She cast spells on the objects, shrinking them down and then Katlyn swallowed them. She surrendered to the council as they surrounded her and delivered their punishment. She was to be dealt with in the most severe punishment their legal system had to offer; being thrown into a world of devils. Her gear was stripped from her and they sent her through a portal to hell.

Katlyn fought off the first devils to find her, hid away and coughed up the two books she had swallowed and brought with her. Then she began observing the devil society, and found a merchant devil who was powerful enough to get her what she needed, but weak enough the Katlyn was confident that she could escape him if the situation came to that. She presented the devil with the second tome, a lost piece of horrible writing that was of great value to the devils. In exchange for this priceless piece, Katlyn wanted passage to another plane of existence, a mortal one. The fiend eventually managed to find one, a one way portal, so small that only the weakest fiends could travel through it, that was under constant guard by the country’s militia for devil attacks. Katlyn turned over her payment and stepped through the portal.

As soon as she arrived, Katlyn spun a tearing tale about how she was kidnapped by devils and sold as a slave. The guards immediately clothed her and took her in, only halting to make sure that she was not a devil in disguise by checking for any illusions. As soon as she had the opportunity, Katlyn left the warriors to begin her new quest; the building of an army to conquer her home plane.

On the surface, Katlyn looks like a mercenary. She accepts any mission for the highest bidder, selling her formidable arcane powers and the muscle of her followers for gold. However, she is in truth much more than that. She has been building an army, and using these mercenary missions to fund and expand her operations. Katlyn will incorporate anyone into her ragtag army, she cannot afford to be picky. However, most of her army is made up of trolls, ogres and bugbears. On her home plane, they were the enemies of The Great Elvish Empire, and were whipped out centuries ago. While the samples from her home plane were far more intelligent, Katlyn finds using these legendary creatures quite a boost to her ego. In her home plane, Trolls, Bugbears and Ogres were too proud to take orders from elves, and she quite enjoys seeing them tend to her every whim. She also finds the idea of bringing back these old enemies to conquer her home nation quite enjoyable. She dreams of returning to lay ruin to the council that banished her, and only hopes that she will be ready before the Archmagus Supreme dies so she can kill him herself. Still, she is patient. By elf standards she is still very young, and can afford to spend centuries breeding an army if it is necessary.

Katlyn has long black hair and sharp, distinct features. She wears a traditional female robe from her home world, fabric covered wood that makes a very stiff outfit. Katlyn seems to have no concept of sexuality, and tends to ignore any comment in regards to the matter. She is focused to a fault, sometimes skipping meals or even staying up for days working on her little plans. Most of her plans involve getting funding for her operations, recruiting new followers, or getting her hands on a particularly powerful magic item. She has no interest in conquering this world, and merely intends to drain its resources until she can return home, triumphant, with an army.
